Famed Conservator Commissioned By Private Collector For Modern Artist’s Late-Period Work
LOS ANGELES, CA, February 13, 2020 /Neptune100/ — Forensic scientist and fine art conservator, Peter Paul Biro has been commissioned by a private American art collector to perform conservation work on, ‘Femme Drapée’ – a 1926 oil on canvas paiting by Spanish artist, Juan Gris. Bord in Madrid, Gris is considered one of the primary Cubist style artists, along with Pablo Picasso.
Peter Paul Biro studied the work, measuring 73 x 60 cm over the course of several months in his laboratory. Preliminary scientific analysis indicated a varnishing of several times had been done on the painting over its life. The varnish coatings on the painting had darkened over time, resulting in a changing of the work’s appearance over time.
The painting was created during January and February of 1926. Mr. Gris died in 1927. The artist, real name – José Victoriano (Carmelo Carlos) González-Pérezk spent most of his life living and working in France where he perfected his craft.
In regards to, ‘Femme Drapée’, Peter Paul Biro performed a labor of love, painstakingly cleaning the painting centimer by centimer, restoring the work of art and revealing a warmer, brighter and most would say a more nuanced central feminine figure along with the beautiufl drapery that adorns her frame. In the process, conservator Mr. Biro restored the artwork to its original beauty.
Now that ‘Femme Drapée’ has been has been fully restored, Peter Paul Biro is now conducting a full forensic analysis of the Juan Gris painting. Once complete, this will be the first such forensic analysis ever performed on a painting by the Cubist artist. The artworld is excited, as this forensic analysis should new light and insights into both the materials and methods that Mr. Gris used to paint his beautiful and distinctive works of art.
Personal friends with Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, the artist Juan Gris had his first exhibition in 1912, in Paris. It was during this time period that Mr. Gris began to appreciate the importance of mathematics in painting and his Cubist style flourished. Later in 1912, Juan Gris exhibited at Exposicío d’art cubista, Galeries Dalmau in Barcelona, the first declared group exhibition of Cubism worldwide.
