MANAGEMENT TEAM
Jonathan Westeinde, Managing Partner
Jonathan is the founder of the Windmill Development Group, one of Canada’s most well-known and accomplished green building developers and has completed over $1B of new developments since inception in 2005 with an existing pipeline of approx. $1.5B of projects under development. All of the company’s mixed use buildings have earned LEED Platinum ratings, an unprecedented track record in the industry. Jonathan has overall responsibility for project feasibility, planning, finance, sales, marketing and construction activities. Prior to founding Windmill, Jonathan was a founding partner of Venbridge, the venture capital services division of Gowlings, one of Canada’s leading law firms.
Previously, Jonathan was CEO and founder of LOSC, Inc., a Boston based venture capital firm, and had senior positions with Corel Corporation and Exocom Consulting post completing his MBA. Jonathan has also spent several years in the real estate development industry in various leasing and financing positions. Jonathan’s most recent focus has been the creation of a comprehensive integrated solution to green existing buildings. The green building retrofit market is an area that represents potentially one of the greatest opportunities to make significant carbon reductions in North America.
Jonathan completed his BA Economics from the University of Western Ontario and holds an MBA from Trinity College, Dublin.
Alex Speigel, Partner
Alex is an architect (OAA ret) and a senior urban development professional with forty years of experience in design, development and management. In 2012, he joined Windmill as Partner responsible for the Toronto Office and as a Senior Consultant with Urban Equation, providing consulting services to other developers, asset managers and social enterprises.
Prior to joining Windmill, Alex worked as a consultant and developer on a number of infill projects in Toronto and from 1996-2006 was Director of Development with Context Development where he directed a number of innovative residential and mixed-use projects in Toronto: Kensington Market Lofts, District Lofts, Ideal Condominiums, Mozo, Home, Spire, Tip Top Lofts and The Loretto. From 1986-1996 he worked with General Leaseholds Limited, a publicly listed real estate company that developed and managed commercial real estate properties in smaller communities around Ontario.
He serves on the Friends of the Greenline and served on the board of the ARA, advisory panel of the Consumers Council Residential Intensification Panel and the CMHC Roundtable on Housing Policy. Alex holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Carleton University, l’Universite de Montreal
Mark Holden, Partner
Mark is a partner with Windmill Development Group and brings over 25 years of real estate experience in asset management, portfolio management, dispositions, lease negotiations, finance, and analysis. He holds an MBA from Queen’s University and has advised Senior Management at a number of Canada’s top pension funds on real estate strategy and structure.
Prior to joining Windmill, Mark was Vice President, Asset Management for Morguard Investments Limited responsible for their advisory based office and industrial assets in Eastern Canada, and two Canada wide industrial pooled funds, and a pooled fund of multi-family apartments across Canada. This 18 million square foot, $2.7 billion portfolio gave Mark an opportunity to identify office buildings in the portfolio that could be retrofit to LEED EBOM standard. The 370,000 square foot office tower at Bay and Bloor was retrofit to a LEED Gold standard exceeding its proforma returns with over a 15% IRR on the project. Mark holds a BA Economics from Western University and an MBA from Queen’s University.
Justin George, Partner
Justin George is a Partner with Windmill Development Group and a Director with Urban Equation. With vast local and international experience, Justin is an expert in complex, community-scale development. Prior to joining the firm Justin was a senior executive with a number of large international consulting, management and construction firms including; Grant Thornton LLP, Turner & Townsend, WSP Global, Aecom and Kier International.
Over the course of his career he has advised hundreds of clients including pension funds, banks, developers, owners and private-equity groups investing in real estate and development both in Canada as well as overseas. This rare breadth of experience combined with an in-depth understanding of development economics allows Justin to promote a client-focused and solutions-driven approach to the complexities of the built environment.
Originally trained in the UK, Justin recently completed a real estate development program at Harvard University and is a professional member of both the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Canadian Institution of Quantity Surveyors (CIQS). Justin was appointed to the RICS Canada Board in 2012.
Justin attended the Advanced Management Program in Real Estate at Harvard University and holds a BSc. Commercial Management & Quantity Surveying from Loughborough University.
Jenny Mcminn, Managing Director – Urban Equation
As Managing Director of Urban Equation, Jenny leads the Real Estate and Sustainability consulting practice. Prior to joining Urban Equation, for nearly a decade at Halsall Associates (now WSP), Jenny led design teams, municipalities and building owners in the creation of award winning high performance green building and community design projects.
With her experience in sustainable architecture, performance management and business modeling, she has led teams on a wide variety multi-disciplinary stakeholders and consultants on a range of cutting edge green projects including those targeting One Planet Living, Living Building Challenge, The WELL standard and LEED Platinum.
Jenny’s leadership in Sustainable Design was recognized in 2014 through her nomination to the City of Toronto’s Design Review Panel. Prior to working in sustainability full-time, Jenny worked with internationally renowned London, England-based architectural firm – Foster + Partners.
Jenny has a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Environmental Studies – both from the University of Waterloo.
