Venture Studio’s Second Location Built During the Pandemic Through a Human-Centered Design Lens Functions as Nature’s Creative Factory

PALO ALTO, CA/TOKYO, JAPAN, March 24, 2021 /Neptune100/ — Moon Creative Lab, a human-centered venture studio, co-headquartered in Palo Alto and Tokyo, today announced the official opening of their new Tokyo studio located on the first and second floors of Spring Terrace Omotesando in Kita-Aoyama, Tokyo, Japan.

Moon Creative Lab, founded in 2018, powers the creation of new businesses. The new studio will further accelerate Moon’s mission is to help Mitsui & Co. in its pursuit to become a more future-forward, entrepreneurial company. Moon Creative Lab continues to invest in talent to help Mitsui’s 45,000 strong global workforce build extraordinary new businesses, while dramatically transforming the people who experience the venture journey.

Conceptualized as “Nature’s Creative Factory,” the Tokyo location aims to be a creative space for anyone to freely think and collaborate surrounded by lush greenery and natural materials.

“Covid reminded us all of the importance of being in nature and we focused our design brief with that feeling of expansiveness in mind. We believe that by creating a safe and comfortable workplace for everyone to feel welcome again, this would allow for more imagination than ever before,” said Mike Peng, Chief Creative Officer, Moon Creative Lab. “The new Tokyo studio allows the room to think, create, play and dream. Exactly the environment Moon has always wanted to achieve.”

The main area of the building, located on the second floor is intentionally built without walls, allowing people to work in a flexible layout using moveable interiors to create unique partitions; ideal for hosting creative brainstorms, gatherings, and small events. The floor also houses a shared prototyping makerspace that provides room for the cross-pollination of ideas and teams.

To bring the Palo Alto and Tokyo teams closer together, the second floor also has a projector that runs a continuous live stream of Moon’s Palo Alto studio location during working hours.

On the first floor, the open space has three connected projectors that tell the stories of all the ventures in Moon’s portfolio. The adjacent wall — known as the Venture Wall — showcases custom posters of every venture designed and illustrated by Moon’s Communication Designers.

The entire studio has very few doors and easily opens to the outside balcony inviting the outdoors in. All equipment throughout the studio can be used hands-free to accommodate the new post-Covid world.

“Our Tokyo studio provides a home for where innovation happens, from ideation to execution. It gives our teams and idea owners the creative safe space we’ve all been craving since working fully remote,” said Peng. “This will help us continue strengthening the support we deliver to the people of Mitsui & Co and beyond.”
