From multipurpose spaces and happy colors, to grandmillennial and rustic vogue design, the year’s biggest trends will reimagine what ‘home’ is

SAN DIEGO, CA, December 12, 2020 /Neptune100/ — Today, Jackson Design and Remodeling released their Top 10 Interior Design Trends for 2021. As 2020 kept many people working, living and otherwise entertaining themselves from the comfort of their own homes, 2021 will be defined by reimagined versions of what a home can be. The list features emerging wellness-focused trends such as bringing nature indoors, creating livable space outdoors, and designing soft, comfortable spaces to promote self-care. Additionally, Jackson Design and Remodeling designers predict a shift to adapted kitchens built with multi-surfaced, elaborate islands (with color!) and storage areas on a whole new level.

After a somber year full of challenges, Jackson Design and Remodeling also predicts more bright, optimistic colors within homes. Pantone unveiled their highly anticipated color of the year for 2021, selecting two colors for the second time in 22 years. According to Pantone, the union of the practical and dependable “Ultimate Gray” with the vibrant and sunny “Illuminating” yellow expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. After a year like no other, it makes sense that people will turn to happy, bright colors balanced with reassuring neutrals to regain a sense of hopefulness in their homes.

Award winning Senior Interior Designer and Design Department Head at Jackson Design and Remodeling Tatiana Machado-Rosas says “In 2021, people are looking for homes that not only serve practical, daily purposes but for homes that nurture their souls, bring family together and promote wellbeing. Serenity will become a cornerstone of design, inspiring people to connect with greenery and natural elements indoors and outdoors.”

In addition to Zen-inspired spaces, Jackson Design and Remodeling anticipates an emergence of grand millennial aesthetics featuring scallops, natural fiber rugs and other contemporary elements. On the opposite end of the spectrum, expect rustic vogue details like exposed beams and original wood floors to continue to gain popularity. As people worked, lived and entertained themselves at home this past year, many have altered their perspectives on what their homes can serve as. In light of changing attitudes about home design and function, Jackson Design and Remodeling anticipates a surge in hobby rooms fit for crafting, yoga, and other activities.

Jackson Design and Remodeling’s critically acclaimed designers and architects, who have been featured in major national print and online publications including The Wall Street Journal, Dwell, HGTV and Architectural Digest, crafted a complete list of trends on their radar for the upcoming year:

1. The Multi-Tasking Home
Homes serve as workplaces now and they’re also our safe and comfortable place for home education, home gyms, and home spas. Whether a home is expanded to include these areas or remodeled to accommodate them in the same footprint, our concept of “home” is changing. These fresh, creative attitudes about the idea of “home” will spark an increase in creating hobby rooms for crafting, yoga, or other activities.

2. Minimalist Spaces
Sharing their work, school and personal lives at home, it makes sense that people are yearning for uncluttered space with minimalist style. To promote focus and create distraction-free zones, many will turn to minimalist aesthetics.

3. The Heart of the Home – Kitchen Islands on a Whole New Level
Kitchen designs are adapting with multipurpose seating and storage areas to accommodate education and work along with cooking and eating. Kitchen islands with cantilevered seating areas and multilevel surface areas will be especially trendy. Colorful islands that contrast and complement kitchen paint colors will be a big trend. With everyone spending more time in the kitchen, and with multiple tasks on hand, utilizing multiple levels helps define the space and create opportunities to work, eat and socialize together in the heart of the home.

4. Outdoor Living Year-Round
Connection to the outdoors has become even more essential to physical, mental and spiritual wellness and indoor/outdoor living design is a primary concern for the modern home dweller. Homeowners are creating expansive outdoor living areas with full outdoor kitchens and louvered roofs to make the space functional in any weather and to provide a natural escape that keeps us energized and filled with Vitamin-D, a deficiency of which impacts our outlook and performance.

5. Bringing Greenery Inside
In addition to creating livable outdoor space, connection to natural surroundings is emphasized in home interiors both architecturally – with large windows and glass doors – and decoratively – with floral inspired accessories, house plants, and mini Zen gardens inside. You heard that right – house plants are making a comeback! Bringing nature indoors promotes wellbeing and spirituality for many.

6. Rustic Vogue
When you love modern design but yearn for the warm comforts of cabin living, rustic vogue is for you. Think open modern spaces but with character details like wooden beams or original wood floors and a connection to nature.

7. Grandmillennial
This fun mashup combines style from Granny like chinoiserie, scallops, natural fiber rugs, and topiaries with contemporary elements like clean lines and modern art.

8. Well Rested Design
Bedroom design, from soft materials and colors to window treatments that sufficiently block light, will get more attention in the coming year as people look for ways to pair luxurious comfort with self-care and wellness.

9. Optimistic Colors
Bright yellows, oranges, pinks and other serotonin-inducing colors will be popular in 2021. Designers at Jackson Design and Remodeling aren’t the only ones who think so – Pantone also just announced that a happy shade of yellow is the 2021 color of the year. After a year of lockdowns and loneliness, people will be reaching for optimistic shades that inspire positivity and cheerfulness.

10. Planning Forever Homes
A 2018 AARP survey of adults revealed that three out of four adults age 50 and older want to stay in their homes as they get older, illustrating the growing interest in ADUs, which coupled with the events of 2020 that made visiting parents and grandparents challenging, will inspire many to bring extended families under one roof, whether it’s an in-law suite inside the home or a detached ADU dwelling on the same property.
