DALLAS, TX, August 29, 2019 /Neptune100/ — Dallas female percussionist and Sound Design Artist invents app to create cultural awareness for listeners. Musician Duriye Nasuhoglu, a Turkish-born resident of Dallas, wanted to create a way for people to understand the sounds in their environment and focus on how noise pollution affects our surroundings. This prompted the percussionist of over 20 years to create a prototype of her mobile app MapMySound as her graduation thesis at the University of Texas at Dallas in 2012.

As of this year MapMySound has become a reality – beyond Duriye’s master’s degree in sound design and is available now for free download on iPhone devices. Android version is not available now, but it will be in the future. The app allows participants to choose which of their experienced soundscapes they capture and provide a more nuanced understanding of people’s interactions with their sonic environment. Both beginner and advanced users can record audio through their mobile devices’ microphone, label the sounds as well as add a description and photo, and then get the opportunity to mix or alter the sounds. Each sound has a GPS location as well and app users can add other users as friends to keep the conversation going.

“I wanted to give users a sonic and visual experience of another environment without physically being present at the location,” said Duriye, MapMySound founder. “The ultimate aim is to create an urban soundscape database to produce not only static but also animated sound maps of that environment with images and information to be used to enhance urban planning and living experience for humans and animals.”

As a world-traveler, Duriye hopes that the app will motivate users to be more aware of sounds in their community as well as places they visit and get creative.
