Leading Industry Analyst Group Calls Data Discovery and Classification a Foundational Capability for Security, Privacy and Compliance
ST. PETERSBURG, FL, November 20, 2020 /Neptune100/ — Spirion, a pioneer in data protection and compliance, today announced that it was included in Forrester’s Now Tech: Data Discovery and Classification, Q4 2020 report, subtitled, “Forrester’s Overview of 33 Data Discovery and Classification Providers.” The goal of the report is to enable security professionals to “understand the value they can expect from a data discovery and classification provider,” which they call, “a foundational capability to develop to optimize your efforts for security, privacy and compliance.”
The Forrester report highlights the advantages of investing in data discovery and classification technology, including the ability to: “gain greater visibility and understanding of the organization’s sensitive data; secure sensitive data with appropriate controls and policies; and support compliance, privacy, and ethical data use.”
The report seeks to assist security professionals in selecting the right tool based on vendor size and product functionality. Forrester segments the data discovery and classification market according to two key parameters: market presence based on related product revenue, and technology functionality. They classify industry players into three tiers based on revenue, which include: large established players with more than $50 million in annual data discovery and classification revenue; midsize players with between $10 to $50 million in category revenue; and small players with less than $10 million in category revenue.
The firm also segments the data discovery and classification market into five categories based on product functionality as follows: “data management enables preparing data for use; information governance supports data lifecycle management; privacy facilitates privacy processes and compliance; security aims to understand the data to apply appropriate controls; and specialists have a targeted focus on discovery and classification.”
Forrester classifies Spirion as a midsize market player with privacy as its primary functionality segment. They rate the overall privacy market segment functionality highly in data type coverage breadth, data discovery scope, and data identification scope.
Commenting on the report, Jen Holtvluwer, Spirion Chief Marketing Officer states, “Although data discovery and classification form the bedrock of strong data governance programs, stringent compliance regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation and California Consumer Privacy Act, continue to strengthen interest. Understanding where your sensitive data lives and providing persistent and purposeful classification of that data are the first steps in building an effective data protection and privacy program.”
