Inspired by George Floyd’s death, a female entrepreneur creates an app to build a supportive global community around black-owned and operated businesses.

CHICAGO, IL, March 22, 2021 /Neptune100/ — Black consumers have an estimated spending power of 1.2 trillion dollars; however, our spending habits tend to enrich other communities as the black community remains impoverished. A Kellogg School of Management study at Northwestern University found that between half a million and a million jobs could be created if black households spent only $1 of every $10 at black-owned stores and other enterprises.

The BOOM App is an online business directory exclusive for black-owned and operated businesses to thrive globally. It’s a place where people looking for black entrepreneurs can directly access products and services online and in-person at physical stores nationwide.

Sequena Luckett, a digital designer, and strategist by trade, developed her idea with her cousin and business partner James Hampton alongside Arron Pighee & Tonya L. Johnson after wanting to do more for their black community after learning of the horrific news of the death of George Floyd. Together, they have created a fantastic app that is a one-stop shopping experience for people who want to buy black. Since launching the app, they have made an email list of 3000+ businesses. They have been building partnerships that allow the Boom App to position businesses in front of millions of people worldwide.

“I had a hard time with George Floyd’s death because of the inequality that blacks have endured for years,” said Luckett on why she created this app. “I read a report that said 41 percent of Black-owned businesses have closed due to COVID-19 versus 17 percent of white-owned businesses. As a digital strategist, I couldn’t be aware of this information and do nothing. That’s why I created this app.”
